Library was created on the basis of the library of the Faculty of Medicine of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, whose collection at the end of 1949 numbered 6,000 volumes gathered in the Department of Normal Anatomy at 1 22 Lipca Street (currently Spokojna Street).
January 1, 1950 The Faculty of Medicine at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University was transformed into Medical Academy and thus the Library began to operate and develop within the framework of the newly established university. The collection of books included collections donated by, among others: the Main Medical Library in Warsaw, the Ministry of Education, the Association of Polish Physicians in London, the Stefan Grot-Rowecki Fund in Paris. Later, gifts from the Medical Students' Scientific Circle and the Lublin Medical Society were included in its collections, among which were many valuable items from the history of medicine in the 18th and 19th centuries.
In 1951, the Library was moved to premises in very poor condition at Królewska Street.
After strenuous efforts by the then director of the Library, Dr. Stanisław Kowalczyk, in 1958 it was possible to obtain new premises in part of the building at ul. Pstrowskiego 12 (currently Peowiaków).
The transfer of the book collection, which at that time numbered 111,285 volumes, took place in 1959. However, it turned out that the premises that were supposed to serve the Library for 8 years served as its seat for five times longer, for over 40 years.
In 1975, the then director of the Main Library, Zofia Jasińska, due to the huge overload of warehouses located in different parts of Lublin, began to try to establish a Student Lending Library with a textbook warehouse in the Student House No. 3. Ultimately, in 1978 in the basement of Student House No. 4 was established Student Branch.
IN 1991 the process has started computerization of the Library, Initially limited to single-station access to the Medline bibliographic database. In 1994, a local computer network was established, and a year later the Library gained access to the Internet.
The next step was to install the network version of the integrated library system. PROLIB (1996), allowing for complete automation of the library process, cooperation with other medical libraries and faster access to information about resources through the online catalogue – OPAC WWW.
Intensive efforts to improve the premises of the next director of the Library, Lucyna Smyk, resulted in the University purchasing a building at Szkolna Street in the Czwartek district, which, after appropriate adaptation, was to be designated for the needs of the Main Library.
On January 17, 2000, the keys to the new building were handed over to the management and the occupancy phase began.
On the day September 27, 2000 the official ceremony took place opening of new headquarters at 18 Szkolna Street.
In 2008, as a result of changing the name of the University, the name of the library was changed to Library of the Medical University of Lublin.
Since 2010, the Library has been participating in the program "LUBLIN VIRTUAL LIBRARY”, implemented as part of a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
In December 2012, it was established Digital Library of the City of Lublin, promoting the scientific achievements of our University’s employees.
